Our Story

Ever wonder what it was like to homeschool before you could find curriculum online or join local co-ops? Back in 1990, homeschooling in South Carolina felt like navigating uncharted waters. Families were unsure of their rights and faced scrutiny from school districts. It was a time of uncertainty, but thankfully SCAIHS was about to change all of that!

Founded in 1990

In the early days, South Carolina was one of the most challenging states for homeschoolers. SCAIHS, rather than be deterred, worked directly with legislators to build a bedrock of legal support for homeschooling families, helping to establish clear pathways for independent home education.

Zan & Joe

Leading the way was Zan Tyler and her husband, Joe. As homeschooling parents themselves, they believed deeply in the power of home education—not just as a teaching method, but as a vital expression of parental freedom. They recognized that South Carolina needed a strong organization to navigate the complex legal landscape and empower families to choose the education that was right for their children. And so, they became the founders of what is now known as the South Carolina Association of Independent Home Schools, SCAIHS.
