Switching to Homeschooling Midyear: A School Transition Checklist

Switching from school to homeschooling midyear involves more than choosing books. Confirm your homeschool approval or membership, coordinate withdrawal with the current school, and find out which records you need for the next stage of your child's education.

This checklist focuses on the handoff between schools. For decisions about curriculum and the remaining year, read our South Carolina midyear planning guide.

Confirm approval before withdrawing

South Carolina has three legal homeschool options. Complete the approval or membership process for your chosen option before withdrawing your child. Ask how you will know the process is complete and which date your enrollment begins.

A submitted application is not the same as confirmed approval. Keep the confirmation and the organization's or district's contact information where you can find them. Our Getting Started guide explains the broader process.

Coordinate the last school day and first homeschool day

Contact your child's current school and ask how to complete its withdrawal process. Confirm the planned last day, the documents requested and who will acknowledge the withdrawal. Keep a copy of what you submit.

Compare those dates with your homeschool enrollment confirmation. If they do not line up, ask the school and your homeschool organization or district how to resolve the transition before assuming a gap is acceptable.

Our public-school withdrawal guide provides more detail for families leaving public school. Families leaving private school should also check their school's procedures and any enrollment agreement.

Find out which records to request

Ask what records will help establish your child's prior work and current placement. Depending on the student, useful items may include report cards, attendance information, course descriptions, recent work samples and existing support documents.

Ask who will request records, where they should be sent and whether you should keep a family copy. Do not assume that a record request has been completed simply because you discussed it. If you join SCAIHS, ask what the current process requires from you.

Clarify unfinished courses before buying replacements

Write down the courses your child was taking, materials used, recent topics and work still in progress. For high school, ask specifically about course documentation, partial work and credit planning before replacing a course or assuming a grade will transfer.

Keep school-owned materials separate from resources your family owns. Ask about returning books, devices and other borrowed items. These practical details can make the handoff easier to manage.

Review your transition folder

Before your planned start, check that you can locate the enrollment confirmation, withdrawal communication, record requests and unanswered questions. Put names and dates beside anything still pending.

This folder is an organizational aid, not a substitute for the educational records your homeschool option requires. Follow the current instructions for your chosen option.

If you are considering homeschooling, contact SCAIHS to arrange a conversation. You do not need a finished plan before reaching out.
