Planning Ahead for Homeschool College Applications

Planning Ahead for Homeschool College Applications

Begin college-application planning by finding each college's current requirements and deadlines, then work backward to leave time for records, recommendations and writing. Your plan should reflect the colleges and programs you are considering, rather than a single calendar for every student.

The stages below are a planning framework, not institution-specific deadlines. If you are new to the process, our overview of homeschool college applications explains the documentation questions to settle.

While exploring colleges

Identify possible programs and read their current admission information. Note academic preparation, application routes, costs and questions you need to ask.

Begin a comparison record for each college. Include the application deadline, supporting-document deadlines and separate scholarship or financial-aid dates. Record the source and date checked so you can revisit it when the next application cycle opens.

Our college requirements checklist helps you decide what to investigate.

Before the application deadline approaches

Ask who will prepare and submit school documents, and what information that person needs from your family. Review your academic record early enough to resolve missing or unclear information.

Check each college's testing policy before booking an exam. If a score is needed, allow time for registration, preparation, the test date and the required reporting process. Do not assume every institution uses the highest score or combines scores in the same way.

Ask prospective recommenders whether they can help and whether they meet the college's requirements. Give them the actual deadline and submission instructions, rather than assuming an invitation in an application system completes the request.

During the writing period

Read the current prompts and distinguish the main essay from college-specific questions or supplements. Set intermediate goals for drafting, feedback and revision.

Keep an accurate list of activities, work and responsibilities, with details that will help you complete the application. Our guide to preparing essays, activities and recommendations focuses on that work.

Allow space for your student's own thinking. A rushed application can be harder to review carefully, but an elaborate preparation system is not required.

Before submitting

Compare the application with the college's current instructions. Check names, course information, dates, required writing and any application fee or waiver process.

Confirm the status of supporting documents with the person submitting them. Applicant submission and school-document submission may be separate tasks.

Choose a personal review date before the official deadline. That buffer is an organizational choice, not a replacement for the college's deadline.

After submitting

Save the confirmation and follow the college's instructions for checking receipt of materials. If a required item is missing, identify who needs to act and use the college's stated contact route.

Track later requests, decisions and response deadlines. Keep admission, scholarship and financial-aid steps distinct, because completing one does not establish completion of the others.
